8 The Queen against Simon Bernard 1858 Trial of Simon Bernard (for his involvement in the 1858 plot with Felice Orsini to assassinate Napoleon III in Paris).
1st Edition in This Form Unbound Very Good 15 x 24cm Approx
178 pages (numbered 887 to 1064, so 178 pages, but as 2 pages to each page is 89 actual pages). Unbound, contents very good, clean & tight, edge damage to 1st & last page. Historically interesting. It is for his involvement in the 1858 plot to assassinate Napoleon III in Paris. and gives a background of the case as stated in court. And the bombs used were made in England by gunsmith Joseph Taylor and tested in Sheffield and Devonshire, also the witnesses statements and cross examination given in court. Not sure if complete or lacking some notes at rear. Simon François Bernard (1817-1862) was a French surgeon and republican revolutionary. He is best known for his involvement in the 1858 plot of Felice Orsini to assassinate Napoleon III. Bernard was a Fourierist. He was given a state trial in England, and was defended by Edwin John James and Henry Hawkins; and was sensationally acquitted. He had opted for a completely English jury, and his defence council's rhetoric outweighed the summing-up of the judge, which tended towards a conviction. At the end of 1857, Orsini briefly visited England, where he contacted gunsmith Joseph Taylor and asked him to make six copies of a bomb of Orsini's own design; it would explode on impact and used fulminate of mercury as an explosive. The bomb was tested in Sheffield and Devonshire with the aid of French radical Simon Bernard. Satisfied, Orsini returned to Paris with the bombs and contacted other conspirators, Giuseppe Pieri, Antonio Gomez and Carlo di Rudio (later changed to Charles DeRudio). On the evening of 14 January 1858, as the Emperor and Empress were on their way to the theatre in the Rue Le Peletier, the precursor of the Opera Garnier, to see Rossini's William Tell, Orsini and his accomplices threw three bombs at the imperial carriage. The first bomb landed among the horsemen in front of the carriage. The second bomb wounded the animals and smashed the carriage glass. The third bomb landed under the carriage and seriously wounded a policeman who was hurrying to protect the occupants. Eight people were killed and 142 wounded, though the emperor and empress were unhurt. Napoleon, the first modern European politician, realized that he and Eugénie de Montijo had to proceed to the performance and appear in their box. Orsini himself was wounded on the right temple and stunned. He tended to his wounds and returned to his lodgings, where police found him the next day. Undated printed c1860.

Then the 12 monthly parts January to December, Page No 1 to 478 it looks like there may have been a page or two more , but as i was unable to find another copy anywhere i'm not sure. Overtly theological with numerous items of sailors religious stories on and off ships inc 18th cent, and letters ,voyage to America in parts, as is very Theological i'm not sure if many sailors would want to buy it in 1820 so may have been the only year published *** i purchased it with book ref 000478 The Soldier's Magazine and Naval Chronacle of 1829 pub. Wakefield, by late editor of the Sailors Magazine, so he had another try but even that seems to be unknown and could not find another copy anywhere ,let alone on sale)

London W. K. Wakefield 1828 First Edition 14 x 22 Cm approx
First Edition. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" Approx. VERY RARE Tome comprising a book, 521pages of the 1st. 24 issues of The Soldier's Magazine .after Title page , is Vol 1- No.1 January 1828 ( to December) 228pages then Vol 2 -No.1 January 1829 (to Dec.) 284 page then 8 page list of contents of Vol.ll,..Condition generally very good Original 1/4 leather & mottled boards, minor rubbing.contents vey good ( with minor faults of staining/slight loss to end-pages only) a good/tight book with very minimal sign's of use. NO inscriptions .The title page states "The Soldier's and Sailors Magazine" ( and Sailor's has been crossed out as it was a printing mistake). NO named Author but "conducted by the late editor of the sailor's magazine." who would appear to be Tom Starboard , and therefore overtly theological, so may have been why i could not find another copy anywhere, let alone for sale. the Vol 1 -- 1828 ( but contains vol 1 & Vol.2 1828 &1829)and sold by W.Sams bookseller to the King and others.contains lots of details inc. a breakdown of the costs of the Army.Possibly Unique as the National Army Museum has not heard of it and it's not listed in Fredrick Lake's 4 vol set on the British Army journals/publications, or in British Lib site. So the magazine may have only lasted the 2 years contained in this tome !!!!! ( see also my book 000612 the Sailor's Magazine for all of 1820 )

Although is Printed as 2nd edition is in fact can be called a 1st Edition ,as it contains so much more than the 1st edition Also it is thought the letters and publication were secured & released by Benjamin Franklin who was living in London at the time & most interestingly at same period met & became a good friend of Thetford born Thomas Paine who he talked into emigrating & gave letters of introduction for when Paine arrived in America, It is not known if Paine saw the letters or had a hand in this or the furore that this had in England & America, but a very interesting thought.
