London Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle 1872 1st Edition in This Form Quarter -Leather Hard Back Very Good 13 x 19cm Approx 
viii + 309 pages + 2 page ad rear + 32 page publishers catalogue rear, dated Oct 1871 for 1871-2 season. Condition Binding Quarter leather modern binding, six section spine all in almost mint condition, minor rubbing to embossed gilt titles on spine (poss removed from original binding, see scans). Contents Good, tight copy, modern mottled end pages, all the rest original 1872, including original blank endpages, 1st endpage with small oval impressed W.H. Smiths seal top. no inscriptions, has foxing mostly front/rear, nothing major. Illustrated frontispiece . First published in three volumes in 1868. This present edition states 2nd edition, But I have called this a "First edition in this form" as not the same,as authors preface states this 1872 edition is carefully revised and materially curtailed edition. It seems to have been printed October or later 1871 for 1872. This is Very Rare, at time of Listing could not find another 1872 edition for sale.

iv + 92 pages + 8 pages publishers book ads rear. Original embossed green binding with embossed gilt boat in sea front & embossed gilt title to spine in Good condition, minimal denting to edges. Contents Good, clean & tight, old Foyles sticker to inside cover, a couple of pencil alterations (can be removed), no owner names etc. Author unknown, as used the pseudonym of Salacia ( Roman mythology).One of the earliest and rarest books on the subject, even not listed in the British Library (just a microfilm copy).
