Rebound in hard backed black buckram with poss the original leather title label on spine, and new endpage front/rear. contains all 5 illustrations & folding map as listed. A very detailed & historic book of the people who lived in Khondistan, their ways, customs and dress in detail. Khondistan' was invaded and conquered by the armies of the British East India Company during the 1830s-60s . All pages present, almost invisible white repair to inside front to front end page, 2 pages edge trimmed, most pages in good clean condition, some minor foxing mostly to illustrated pages & nearby pages, a few edge nicks, a few corner folds, folding map at rear in fair condition, some foxing, one tiny edge tear, did not notice any inscriptions. So condition fair/good, but for this title, overall it is a very good & complete copy of this very hard to find book, as must have been the first detailed account by a British person who lived there. Campbell (1802-1877), born on the island of Skye in 1802. Joined the East India Company in 1820, a lieutenant 41st Madras native infantry, stationed in various Madras places, until promoted captain in 1830. In 1834 ordered to quell an insurrection among the hill tribes in the province of Kimedy in Orissa, His knowledge of Orissa caused him to be again employed in the Goomsoor war of 1836-7, after was placed in civil charge of the Khonds, or hill tribes of Orissa, with special instructions to suppress the practices of human sacrifice and female infanticide. Campbell soon obtained a marvellous control over them, and, without resorting once to the use of troops, managed to save the lives of hundreds of destined victims, But his successor in Orissa, Captain Macpherson entirely changed Campbell's policy, and disturbances broke out, so in 1847 Campbell was ordered to supersede Captain Macpherson and to take up his old appointment. Back in Britain in 1859 promoted major-general. Then mostly due to this book, Campbell's undoubted services was recognised and awarded the order of the Star of India and its division into three classes in 1866, In 1872 made general, he died at Edinburgh in 1877. Following surveys by British geologists from the 1860s-1900s, from the 1920's resource extraction is the new invasion by aluminium and other companies and a series of massive dams and reservoirs built from the 1950s-1990s , now the area is part of Orissa, in the east of India.
