Title page, + 10 pages text front + 10 at rear + 104 photographic illustrations Black/White & Colour. Custom Hardback binding with plain endpapers, i.e. A specially bound paperback with original covers in a black hardback binding with gilt embossed title to spine "Stone-Carvings at Bingling Temple" in mint condition. Contents almost mint condition, no inscriptions, just small printed label to inside rear of the UK importer/book shop. Apart from English text to spine, & inside book a printed date of 1982, and a small printed basic description of title in English stating original £7.50 price to top of Title page, otherwise ALL text is Chinese. This is a guide book to the Temple, mostly of its sculptures , some painted walls & architecture. Contains 2 folding maps at front.

ix + 241 pages. Original hardback with embossed gilt title front & spine, in fair/ good condition, minor wear, darkened spine. Contents good, Illustration opposite title page still retains it's tissue paper in good condition, no inscriptions, decorative ex libris of Maude Dade inside front cover. Has 4 full-page b/w plates and 5 b/w illustrations within the text. Patrick Lafcadio Hearn 1850 - 1904), known also by his Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo (?? ???), was born in Lefkada ( his middle name), a Greek Ionian Island, the son of Sergeant Major Charles Bush Hearn (of Ireland) and Rosa Antoniou Kassimati, a noble Greek woman, Lived in various countries, Ireland, from 1872 to 1875 a reporter for the Cincinnati Daily Enquirer, West Indies as a correspondent in 1887. In 1890 he was in Japan, found a home, a Japanese wife and his greatest inspiration. The Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum and his old residence are still two of Matsue's most popular tourist attractions. He became a naturalized Japanese, assuming the name Koizumi Yakumo, in 1896 after accepting a teaching position in Tokyo.

6 West, Rev. Thomas West Ten Years in South-Central Polynesia: Being Reminiscences of a Personal Mission to the Friendly Islands and Their Dependencies ( Tonga Islands )

500 pages + i + xv front + 2 folding maps. Binding is the original embossed brown buckram, in poor condition, front/spine loose, missing half of spine. Contents fair/good. Mostly good clean pages, engraved frontis portrait of George Tubou, King of the Friendly Islands very clear, a few minor fox dots. Folding map front fair/good, minor edge tears not reaching map & minor edge paper ageing, black/white with volcanoes hand coloured. The 2 page map of Vavau Harbour fair, no tears minor page ageing. Gift inscription on endpaper "Presented to R. ------ By the Hackney Branch Wesleyan ---- Missionary Society, H. Pearson , Hon Sec." in this book West tells how he sailed for Tonga on the "General Hewitt" in 1845, rescuing 4 starving seamen at sea, stopping at Sydney and Auckland ( inc. a war chiefs meeting in Auckland) on the way. West also describes Fiji ( he visited Fiji on his voyage home), arriving Tonga in 1846 and spent 10 years as a missionary. He explains the History of Tonga and the King , the political affairs in the islands, a description on the islands including Geology, recent accounts of volcanic activity, his personal observations on the life & death he encountered, missionary work, Effects of the French Treaty. etc. etc.. & two appendices rear on the Tonguese Language and Grammar. The author notes in the preface that the publication was delayed for several years due to his Wesleyan Missionary compilations/translations of various works, for the Tonga nation, including the translation of the Bible into Tongan for the British and Foreign Bible Society…. So a rare complete edition with ORIGINAL maps in fair overall condition, or a good reading copy in need of rebinding, with most pages in very good condition, some pages with corner folding, dirt etc.. Please note; this is a heavy book weighing about 2. kilo with packing so postal surcharge outside EU (Europe) (too heavy for Canada). Any queries please email.

Contents Very good with no visible faults .illustrated with various fold- out maps and Photograph illustrations . A very good detailed book written at the time to preserve facts/dates.
