Evandra, Anon, Illustrated by Alfred Mac Donald
7 Anon, Illustrated by Alfred Mac Donald Evandra
Not given, poss. Ernest Nister 1902 First Edition, Poss Not Published Waxed paper hardback Vellum Folio 34 x 44cm. Approx. Alfred Mac Donald / Alfred MacDonald
Dedication page, Title page + 37 pages. Binding fair/poor, Vellum coloured (waxed paper on board) with some rubbing and edge wear. Gilt title to front. Contents fair, almost all pages illustrated to top/base/side. Most good and clean, No inscriptions, a few pages detached with edge wear/folding, others starting to loosen due to poor glue used in 1902 on the folio sized pages. End pages decorated with tiny gilt flowers, Dedication page "Dedicated to my wife Christmas MDCCCCII" (i.e. 1902). Title page just has "Evandra" printed in brown/gold. The 10 canto story seems to be a very sad Scottish fishermen /folk love poem about Torquil, Dughal & Evandra, mentions Ben Doran, Ulva's Isle etc. Each page seems to be printed/engraved as one with decorative text and illustrations all printed in brown ink. From checking Google & book/library sites I was unable to find this book mentioned. Looks complete but as no other copy found can not be 100% sure as pages are not numbered. There is always the possibility a rich person, publisher, printer or Alfred Mac Donald had this printed as a unique love token, and therefore this is the only copy. I have put possibly published by Ernest Lister as is very much in their style. Size is Folio approx 34cm x 44cm ( 13 Ĺ x 17 Ĺ inches)

16 Melton, Robert Melton, Kerrison & Smith owned by Lady Caroline Kerrison, edited by Lucy Toulmin Smith A Common-Place book of the fifteenth century, containing a religious play and poetry, legal forms and local accounts. Printed from the original ms. at Brome Hall, Suffolk, Lady Caroline Kerrison. Edited with notes by Lucy Toulmin Smith.
Privately printed 1886 1st Hard Book Good Vellum 15 x 23cm Approx. Signed/dedicated by Lady Caroline Kerrison
"The Boke of Brome" page + 2 illustrated pages + half title page + title page + ii + 176 pages. Cream binding (faux vellum ) with red line around edge in fair/good condition, some dirt, stain, corner knock. Contents; good, rough cut pages, some very mild foxing, still with tissue paper between the 2 illustrated pages. Only inscription noticed, is to The Boke of Brome page "For Lucy Page Roberts from her aff------- ( affectionate?) friend. Caroline Kerrtson" . . Title page states "Printed from the original manuscript at Brome Hall, Suffolk, by Lady Caroline Kerrison. Edited with notes by Lucy Toulmin Smith" so most institutions list this as the author was Lady Caroline Kerrison or by Lucy Toulmin Smith, both incorrect. From notes it is clear, the main a/cís part were written by Robert Melton of Stuston, who seems to have used a half written book of poems for his a/cís and many refer to Stuston &some to Scole , it is possible Robert Melton was working for the Cornwallis family who owned Stuston in the fifteenth century, & Brome Hall. It was much later the Kerrison family purchased Brome Hall, from the Cornwallis family. Lady Caroline Kerrison owned the original manuscript (her husband having died c1886) at the time of publication and asked Lucy Toulmin Smith to help to get it ready to publish it in full. As privately printed, possibly less than 100 were printed, and from a quick net check very few remain today and only found in institutions, none for sale. This being signed and dedicated from Lady Caroline Kerrison who though not the real author was the person who owned the original manuscript and was responsible for this tome being publishe

17 Roper, H. Roper Editor The Journal ; of Education, National Union of Teachers Portsmouth and District Teachers' Association Magazine complete from Feb 1932 to/including Dec 1933 issues.
Portsmouth National Union of Teachers Portsmouth and District 1933 First Edition in This Form Hard Back Very Good 13.5 x 20.5cm Approx
582 pages, Red hardback binding with "The Journal 1932-3" gilt embossed to spine, in good condition, minor edge wear. Contents Very good/mint, just inscription inside front end page "Private Copy, L.H. Puzey". This seems to be a complete run of ad hoc Teachers magazines, some are published for 3 months others for 2 months, includes various subjects including Interviews with teachers, book reviews, staff changes, reminiscences, cricket, football, life & letters and lots more, not forgetting lots of great period adverts throughout. Book Starts with page 57, which is the Title Page for No.47 February 1932, to page 296, then pages 1- 284, then page 1, which is the Title Page for No. 56 December 1933 to page 60. Looks complete for 2 years of issues, except individual magazines would have had their own (paper/card?) covers. A quick net check found no other copies, but hard to be sure as title page & spine just has "The Journal", not sure if monthly magazine covers would have been the same or "The Teachers Journal" or " The Journal of the Portsmouth and District Teachers' Association" or another title. . A very rare National Union of Teachers Union magazine just for the Portsmouth and District area, so would have had a very low print run, and do not think it lasted much longer. Historically interesting for teaching of the area. The Chairman of the Press and Journal committee was Mr. F. J. Smith.
