London Nisbet & Co 1869 First Edition Card Good 10 x 15cm Aprox Authors Own Copy
26 pages + 2 religious pages + 4 page Favourite verses of an aged lady ; who died in faith, Aug. 11, 1858. The extras; inside cover a 2 page pencil drawing of a cottage in the country inscribed in corner " Aug 23rd/62 E.O.S" (drawn by E.O.S in 1862). next 2 pages are 2 watercolours, an old Lady & old man ( poss. Mrs Olive and husband or her parents). Book is undated, inscribed top of Title page "Mrs. Olive's own copy 1869". Binding good, with minor edge wear/sunning. Contents fair, with a little staining to a few pages near top. Folded title page, a couple of pages a little loose (one detached)., one word altered. At time of listing I was unable find ANY mention of this book, none for sale or in libraries etc. Story seems to be about grandparents (Authors?) also mentions a Mr. Olive, story also quiet religious like many books of the period.. Title states by Mrs. Olive, author of "Village Annals". British Library has Village Annals. By Mrs. Olive [Edited by Mrs. E. Sheppard.] undated 1866. from hours checking web seems Mrs Emma Sheppard was an author & pioneer of helping people from workhouses, Author of Sunshine in the Workhouse 1s published in 1858 and various later editions, was from Frome in Somerset and a possible link to Olive, Emma Sheppard being one person, As pencil drawing signed E.O.S. Possibly Emma Olive Sheppard, and Mrs Olive actually being Mrs Emma Sheppard (full name being Emma Olive Sheppard ?) . Please view all scans.

9 Trollope, Frances Trollope The Life and Adventures of Michael Armstrong. The Factory Boy
London Henry Colburn 1840 First Edition Hard Back Good 14 x 21.5cm Approx A. Hervieu & J. Onwhyn
viii + 387 pages + 24 b/w plates. Title page lists Henry Colburn London as main publisher but also lists Bell and Bradfute, Edinburgh & John Cumming, Dublin. Original quarter leather & marbled binding, with mottled edges to pages when closed. In fairly good condition, with wear mostly to edges/corners. Contents mostly good, clean & tight. with foxing/ spotting to plates (normal for this book), and some corner tip folds. One owner inscription to 2nd end-page front "Charlotte Albertina Jones , 4 July 1842" This looks like the 1st true edition in book form as issued first in 12 parts during 1839-40, poss. as the Publisher was not sure such a hard hitting book would sell well. In this edition the illustrations have different publishing dates on (most during 1839) from Feb 1839 to 1840.(most likely plated printed at same time as the 12 parts) and preface mentions "concluded in the twelfth number" again possibly printed at same time as 1st part in Feb 1839. Possibly made up by publisher from 12 unsold parts. This important book is among the first industrial novels published focusing on the plight of child labourers and the horrendous living conditions of the working class. She wrote this after visiting various factories in Manchester & Bradford and seeing 1st hand what most factory bosses thought was normal and acceptable for the lower classes. After publication she was highly criticized, with many of Victorian society considering it in bad taste, even suggesting that she be sent to prison for writing it! Francis also in 1839 became involved with child labour campaigns which eventually led to the Governments revision of the Factories Act of 1844.
