1850-1865 stereo Pier Hotel area Ryde Isle of Wight
1 1850-1865 stereo Pier Hotel area Ryde Isle of Wight

1850-1865 stereo Pier Hotel area Ryde Isle of Wight stereoscopic image / stereo image / stereo card /stereo view size of card is 8. 5 x 17.5cm ( 3 ½ x 7 inches) approx. In ink rear Ryde This comes from a collection of mainly 1860’s stereos, this one looks to be one the stereo’s owner himself took. The view is not like any other I could find on the net. It shows the Pier Hotel (before changing name to The Royal Pier Hotel) It shows the hotel in the background, but clearly with Pier Hotel painted to top, also to the left a building with ? Warm Baths painted on a building that is not there on later Victorian views. Also various horses & carriages, to centre is what looks like it may be a (fisherman’s?) auction?. What seems to date it is, as warm baths went out of fashion in Ryde in the 1860’s , is may be before John Kemp rebuilt the Warm Baths or next door into the Esplanade Hotel From the net ; In 1865 Joseph Kemp, found out his baths were uneconomical and decided to construct a hotel on the site. The new hotel was called “Esplanade Hotel” and opened in 1867. In the mid 1890s Joseph Kemp sold the hotel, and it was renamed the “Royal Esplanade Hotel” On British listed buildings site ; No 15 ref SZ 5992 2/191 (Marine Hotel) Circa 1850. Corner site with George Street. Three storeys painted brick and stuccoed ground floor on plinth. Rusticated quoins. Etc. Is this the baths site in photo, this site has the dating out by about 10 years. Either way this is a very rare, important and possibly unique photograph relating to Ryde and the Esplanade area. Condition; very good clear image, the right image being touch lighter. –----===========================------------------------

Stereo card c1860’s Treasury / Cabinet Office with pill box & household guard £30 A good image, showing the rough muddy? Road, and next to the entrance is an old pill box with a household guard with Bearskin head-wear and a lady coming out of the building. stereoscopic image / stereo image / stereo card /stereo view size of card is 8. 5 x 17.5cm ( 3 ½ x 7 inches) approx. It would also be possible that this image is from the 1850's Possibly a private stereographic card, to rear in ink is “House of Foreign Office, Whitehall” from urns ect. all along the roof is clear it is not the Foreign Office, but found it now to be the Cabinet Office, next to Downing Street. built in 1847 and includes Remains of King Henry VIII's tennis courts, when it was part Palace of Whitehall in the early 16th cent. Later is was used for cock fighting, then a private residence for Princess Anne (later Queen Anne) when she married in 1683, and after Anne's accession in 1702, she gave the building to Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough and her husband, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (the last private residents). Stereo card c1860’s St Paul's cathedral as seen from Southwark bridge “London Views” with old barges and buildings along the the Thames, printed details of St. Pauls to rear. stereoscopic image / stereo image / stereo card /stereo view size of card is 8. 5 x 17.5cm ( 3 ½ x 7 inches) approx. From the “London Views” series that seem to have been made during the 1860's This is a wonderful image, much more important are all the old barges and buildings along the River Thames now lost, also within image can be seen names painted on some buildings including Iron Wharf, Bull Wharf & the Kings Arms and other information. A quick net check, found no other copy. Condition; good image. But seems to have been a rushed series by a small publisher, so although, the left image is very good and clear it does have a few tiny specks in the sky possibly on the negative or more likely during making the image, the right hand image is darker on the left most likely during making the image from the negative.

Diableries Stereoscopic Skeletons Les Cuisines de Satan / Satan’s Kitchen, B. K. Propriete Paris i.e. Adolphe Block
11 B. K. Propriete Paris i.e. Adolphe Block Diableries Stereoscopic Skeletons Les Cuisines de Satan / Satan’s Kitchen
Paris B. K. Propriete Paris i.e. Adolphe Block 1860 - 1870 stereoscopic image / stereo 8. 5 x 17.5cm ( 3 ½ x 7 inches) approx.
It shows a scene in a 16th cent style room or restaurant with a groups of skeletons eating at a table, another drinking, 2 washing up? And a human cook? And other Skeletons/staff with plates of food . size of card is 8. 5 x 17.5cm ( 3 ½ x 7 inches) approx. This rare stereoview card is part of the famous Diableries series. This seemingly normal black and white albumen & tissue backed view when viewed from the front, suddenly comes to life when backlit, which results in transforming the view into a 'night' scene, in which hidden colours magically appear, and the eyes of the skeletons leap out red. Embossed to Top & base on mount is the maker B. K. Propriete Paris i.e. Adolphe Block of Paris. Printed to base of image is 7 Les Cuisines de Satan size of card is 8. 5 x 17.5cm ( 3 ½ x 7 inches) approx. Undated, but c1860- 1870's Condition; mount is on yellow card in good condition, minor dirt. View fair/good as there is minor loss to rear paper ( image is black/white with hand colouring to rear and pierced to candles & some buttons so as bring a glowing white when backlit. Behind this is tissue-backed, it is just a couple of small places at base with tissue loss.) The front paper has small tear to right on right side image only. 'Diableries' (which translates roughly as 'Devilments') depict a whole imaginary underworld, populated by devils, satyrs and skeletons which are very much alive and, for the most part, having fun. Most were created by 3 French sculptors Pierre Adolphe Hennetier (1828-1888) sculptors and photographer, Louis Alfred Habert & Louis Edmond Cougny .made in plaster and clay, on a table with amazing skill, The life-like figures and settings allowed total creative control for the lighting and exposure to create their total artistic imagery be photographed with a stereo camera. The stereo prints on thin albumen paper were then hand painted with watercolour and/or gelatin were applied to the rear. The eyes of each skeleton were pierced out with a sharp instrument, and red gel applied to the back of the pierced holes, which magically transform the eyes of the skeletons to leap out in red when backlit. Then a layer of tissue paper to rear to hide the piercing and hand colouring. and the 3D effect is wonderful when backlit and viewed through a stereoscope. Backlit can easily be achieved by holding the viewer 2 - 3 feet from a bulb. These cards are quite delicate, and must be handled with care, in order not to damage them, so are rare to find these days. This card is an original, published by Adolphe Block and not to be confused with later inferior copies by other French publishers in the late 1880/90's
