1850-1865 stereo Pier Hotel area Ryde Isle of Wight
3 1850-1865 stereo Pier Hotel area Ryde Isle of Wight

1850-1865 stereo Pier Hotel area Ryde Isle of Wight stereoscopic image / stereo image / stereo card /stereo view size of card is 8. 5 x 17.5cm ( 3 ½ x 7 inches) approx. In ink rear Ryde This comes from a collection of mainly 1860’s stereos, this one looks to be one the stereo’s owner himself took. The view is not like any other I could find on the net. It shows the Pier Hotel (before changing name to The Royal Pier Hotel) It shows the hotel in the background, but clearly with Pier Hotel painted to top, also to the left a building with ? Warm Baths painted on a building that is not there on later Victorian views. Also various horses & carriages, to centre is what looks like it may be a (fisherman’s?) auction?. What seems to date it is, as warm baths went out of fashion in Ryde in the 1860’s , is may be before John Kemp rebuilt the Warm Baths or next door into the Esplanade Hotel From the net ; In 1865 Joseph Kemp, found out his baths were uneconomical and decided to construct a hotel on the site. The new hotel was called “Esplanade Hotel” and opened in 1867. In the mid 1890s Joseph Kemp sold the hotel, and it was renamed the “Royal Esplanade Hotel” On British listed buildings site ; No 15 ref SZ 5992 2/191 (Marine Hotel) Circa 1850. Corner site with George Street. Three storeys painted brick and stuccoed ground floor on plinth. Rusticated quoins. Etc. Is this the baths site in photo, this site has the dating out by about 10 years. Either way this is a very rare, important and possibly unique photograph relating to Ryde and the Esplanade area. Condition; very good clear image, the right image being touch lighter. –----===========================------------------------

Antique William Hey Medical Surgical Craniotomy Skull Saw c1830
14 Antique William Hey Medical Surgical Craniotomy Skull Saw c1830
17.5cm long (6 3/4” inches)
Antique William Hey Medical Surgical Craniotomy Skull Saw c1830 Commonly known as a Hey’s saw, it is a double-bladed instrument that allows it to be used for different angled cuts. It is named after Sir William Hey (1736 – 1819 ), an English surgeon who designed and refine the tool This instrument has a steel blade and shaft with a crosshatched ebony? handle. Approximately 17.5cm long (6 3/4” inches), unsigned. Good condition, still sharp. As well over 100 / almost 200 years old has some pitting to steel (nothing major), and various saw tips loss. They were made from c1803 to about 1880, but as they were so good and well made, They were prized and kept buy surgeons and so one made in around 1830 could well have been treasured and still have been in use till the 1880's. It is named after William Hey, an English surgeon who helped refine the tool, in fact this design is almost identical to one of Hey's own tools that were made for him in 1803. It is known that Craniotomy Skull surgery has been around for thousands of years. But the earliest known specialized skull saws that were used in England date to the 14th century. In about 1770 or so Sir William Hey an English surgeon started developing and improving skull saws in Leeds, north England, to find the best design to actually use. And in 1803 he finalized his saws, that were best designs for his use, they soon came to be known as Hey’s saws. The designs were so good, right for use that no general surgical or specialised neurosurgery set was complete without at least one of “Hey’s” saws. They were used to cut the cranium around a skull fracture until the dura, or brain covering, was exposed.

backlit colour/light stereo card c1870 looks like a high class Silversmith or silver dealers stock Popular 1860-1900 believe these c1870, The card is in excellent condition for it's age with some minor age wear on the front cardboard mount and some ageing to edges of image. View good, hidden hand blue & white/silver colouring to rear and pierced white highlights when the card is backlit. size of card is 8. 5 x 17.5cm ( 3 ½ x 7 inches) approx. Undated, but c1860- 1880's This seemingly normal black and white view, but hand coloured and pricked tissue backed and when viewed from the front, with light to rear it suddenly comes to life transforming the view with hidden colours magically appear, and white highlight from tiny holes. They are black and white to front, then a layer of tissue paper to rear to hide the piercing and hand colouring. and the 3D effect is wonderful when backlit that can easily be achieved by holding the viewer 2 - 3 feet from a bulb. These cards are quite delicate, and must be handled with care, in order not to damage them, so are rare to find these days.
