.xi + 168 pages ( numerous illustrations within ). original blue embossed hard back, spine with gilt lettering, Condition of binding fair/good cover quiet good ,dented corners, spine has a minor edge nicks, damaged top (see scan). Contents mostly very good, clean & tight, foxing only to preface page & rear 8 pages, except for the odd spot. The delicate folding plan in good condition with small tear where it joins the page, nowhere near actual plan. Lacks 1st end-page, front binding loose from book but attached to spine/rear cover is OK. Inside cover is the decorative bookplate of Albert Crease Coxhead & his library ref. & 1864 date etc. ( Coxhead was born in 1847 and was an Author).

This is the 7th.edition that is the new & thoroughly revised / enlarged edition by Walter Scott, of 334 pages + about 26 pages of adverts & title pages,,,Original green Binding is very good with clear gilt title/author to front just a couple of minor darker marks to rear. Contents fair/good just a few corner folds & just finger/corner loss of last page (advert) & endpaper missing & 1/2 of one other advert at rear torn/missing. Postage on this item reduced to UK 1, Europe 2, all other 3.

First Edition. 10 1/2" X 12" Approx. 16+ pages( text) +101 full page Architectual illustrations (in green or brown)+ thin paper between illustrations. Very much in the Gothick Revival , with a touch of Elizabethan and evan a minute touch of Art Noveau, with sme great overhanging windows ( some with the fair maiden) iron gates, Towers, Monuments, very ornate doorways ,windows and cable ends . very much aimed at the super rich or,church & municiple/institutions..Original binding is fair/good with just a little sunning to spine (readable gilt titles),rear has sunning to top 1/4.Contents over 90% very good and clear,,, due to the poor glue used in binding 1st few pages of Text and last illustration /endpaper are detatched ( 3 with folds,nicks to edge only). NO inscriptions or hardly any signs of use,..infact this is getting to become rare and hard to find book as print dealers break them up for the 101 full page illustrations.. also free with this is a very rare item, it is a folded 3 page 9 3/4" x 11 3/4" advertising flyer printed on poor paper with tears .nocks and staining with 1896 reviews, some very diverse , mostly good and some bad.,,,,,,....weight is over 5 lbs and 1 1/2" thick

5 Reginald Stuart Poole, Prof. W.B. Richmond, E.J. Poynter, R.A., J.T. Micklethwaite & William Morris. Lectures on Art delivered in support of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. (uncut - unread, Ex Estelle Doheny )
London Macmillan and Co. 1882 First Edition Hard Back Almost Mint 13 x 19.5cm Approx 
x + 232pages, Binding very good, clean & tight. Contents almost mint as all pages from 1-232 are uncut/unread. Inside front has small oval green & gilt bookplate "Ex Libris Estelle Doheny" * ( see below). Minimal ageing to first 2 pages, and 3 small ref details inside front/rear covers. So possibly the finest copy at present for sale & from a very famous collector. This was one of the most important and influential works of the period, it helped the passing of the Ancient Monuments Protection Act in 1882. Contains a series of six lectures to promote the new Society for the Protection of Ancient Monuments. Contents are R.S. Poole of the British Museum, his lecture is "The Egyptian Tomb and the future state", Prof. William Blake Richmond on "Monumental Painting", Edward John Poynter the famous artist on "Some remarks on Ancient Decorative Art", architect J.T. Mickelthwaite, architect on "English Parish Churches". William Morris the famous designer, hero of good old architecture and works of art, head of Morris & Co. etc. etc.has two lectures, which incidentally take up almost half the book, are "The History of Pattern Designing" & "The Lesser Arts of Life". Estelle Doheny (1875-1958) married Edward Doheny (1856-1935) the wealthy oil man and philanthropist. Her great collection was for many years housed at the Vincentian Seminary of St. John's in California. She donated part of her collection to Vincentian Seminary of St. Mary's of the Barrens Missouri, who years later sold some at a Christie's Auction. Estelle was one of the first American female book collectors and was buying books and manuscripts until her death in 1958. She was the only female collector of the time who's library was notable for both its scope and quality. See DePaul University website for their ex Estelle books & their scan of her bookplate, same design but mine is green/gilt.

4th edition. engraved frontispiece + Title page + x + 187 pages + page with list of 3 other books published the same day for Crowder. Contemporary leather Binding is a bit tatty, original/unrepaired. Contents a good reading copy, easy to read with some faults, folded corners, a few pages a bit loose, page 151/2 partly burnt, and lacks page 153/4 and a few pages with burns to pages near spine only (most likely from reading with too close to the reading candle). i.e a tatty copy, but good reading copy with some loss, with some early inscriptions including calculations to front /rear end pages/boards. This book lists London and Colchester prices for the different works of bricklayers, glaziers, painters, masons, carpenters, plasterers, carvers, thatchers etc. with details of ,wood, nails, lead pipes and so much more . William Salmon ((1703-1779) was important and influential author, apart from this book an other builders books is best known for his book Palladio Londinensis a design manual for builders.
